Friends
of Annie's Playground (FAP) Meeting
Monday, August 18, 2003
7:00 PM at the Community Center
1. Fundraising update and financial report:
Mary told everyone about the ceremony at which the Mayor officially
awarded the Dept. of Neighborhoods Large Grants. FAP received
an award in the amount of $86,000. Thanks for representing
the group, Mary!
The Annie’s Playground Fund has raised about $80,000 in cash
match. Glenn and Lauren recently applied for a King County
Youth Sports Facility grant and the Starbucks’ Neighborhoods
Parks grant. In addition, Rita Frischer (Lauren’s mom) is
kindly writing several more grant applications, due in September.
2.
Playground design presentation: Heather Haskins of Landscape
Structures, Inc. (LSI)*
After much deliberation, the group has chosen LSI as the
play equipment manufacturer for the playground (www.playlsi.com).
Heather has been working with a designer to prepare a composite
from the three options discussed at the June FAP meeting.
Electronic versions of LSI’s draft drawings are available
upon request. Simply reply to this e-mail to request a copy.

3.
Project update and design: Randy Robinson of Seattle Parks*
Randy advised the group to keep in mind that the playground
design may have to be modified following an official Parks
review this fall. Randy had two major comments concerning
the design:
a)
The Sandbox is smaller than originally conceived, which
potentially limits free play space for very young children.
To try to increase the size of the Sandbox, the group decided
to eliminate the large platform and sand tables from the
adjacent Tots’ climbing structure. Heather will work on
modifying the Tots’ structure, and present options at the
next meeting.
b)
The design includes many pieces of play equipment, which
potentially overcrowds the playground and limits traffic
flow. To try to generate more space around the Large climbing
structure, Whirl, and Galaxy, the group decided to eliminate
2 of the big kids swings. This reduces the size of the swings
area, but still leaves 4 big kids swings plus 2 seat swings.
Randy will work on the design, and make a presention at
the next meeting. Electronic versions of draft drawings
of the entire playground are available upon request. Simply
