Friends of Annie's Playground (FAP) Meeting
Monday, February 3, 2003
7:00 PM at the Community Center

  1. Fundraising and Community Outreach report:
    • There is now about $55,000 in the Annie's Playground Fund. FAP only needs $20,000 in money or time pledges before May, to reach our goal of $75,000 for the Dept. of Neighborhoods match.
    • Lauren is going to meetings of the Meadowbrook, Maple Leaf, Wedgewood, and View Ridge Community Councils, and the North District and Northeast District Councils to talk about our project and hand out flyers.
    • Janet's daughter Carlee has applied to the "Annie's Pasta" company for a donation of 1,000 boxes of pasta to sell as a playground fundraiser.

  2. Seattle Parks update:
    Randy Robinson (684-7035, randy.robinson@seattle.gov) and Maureen Colaizzi (386-4006, maureen.colaizzi@seattle.gov)
    • The first Parks public design workshop is Feb. 20th, 7 pm at the Meadowbrook CC. However, the footprint and size of the playground are still unresolved, due to two complicating issues....
ˇ First, the entire playground is on property owned by the Seattle School District. This means that a land use agreement must be negotiated between Parks and the School District before we know the playground size and footprint.
ˇ Second, about one-third of the existing playground's footprint is within 50 ft. of Thornton Creek (the legal riparian zone). It is important for the playground to be big enough to accommodate toddlers through teenagers (eg, Nathan Hale students). This will be difficult, if not impossible, if the playground is shrunk by such a large proportion of its current size. FAP is hoping for a timely resolution of these matters, so we can proceed with designing our playground!

  3. Neighborhood Matching Fund (NMF) grant application:
Do YOU want Meadowbrook to have a new playground, but you haven't had the time or money to help? Well, you CAN make a difference by pledging a few hours of your time in spring 2004, to join with the community in a work party to build the playground. Yes, that's a long time from now, but the NMF will match $12 for every hour of time pledged now. Just complete the Individual Pledge Form attached to this message, and return it to Janet Wilson at the Pool.

  4. Benefit Dinner and Auction planning:
The date is Saturday, May 17th, 2003.
    • The ticket price will be $8 per person in advance ($10 at the door), or $25 per family of four. A pasta dinner and sides will be provided (thanks to Justin).
    • FAP has procurred several interesting auction items so far, including the following: a web site package (including free professional design, e-commerce store, and hosting for one year); a gourmet wine lot (with "Annie's Playground" logo labels); Aquarium guest passes; womens' Martial Arts course (3 sessions/week for 8 weeks); Super Deluxe Pool Party at Meadowbrook Pool; certificates for Wedgewood Broiler and Café Van Gogh; book baskets; kayak birding tour; homebaked cakes; etc.
    • Procurement: Meghan, Chrystal, Joni, Bryan, Tizzy, and Lauren have started procurement, but they need YOUR help! Consider what you and your family/friends/local business might be able to contribute to the auction: homecooked dinners, handmade items, gift certificates, gift baskets, weekend getaways, etc. The auction form is attached to this message.
    • Advertising: Community Center and Pool (Janet); Co-op preschool (Dean); Nathan Hale (Meghan), Elementary Schools: Wedgewood (Joni), Laurelhurst (Bryan), Bryant, and Saccajawea (Lauren); Seattle Sun (Lauren)
    • Food (Justin and Joni)
    • Tickets (Dean): To be sold starting in March. Special childrens' activities will be planned for the evening, so that parents can participate in the auction.
